Brentford Baths in Clifden Rd were opened in April 1896
with' walking on the water' and other intriguing acts
performed by Miss Agnes Beckford and her troupe. As well
as the swimming pool there were slipper baths, a washhouse
and laundry. In winter the pool was floored over and used
for dancing and other social events. The baths were home
to the Brentford and Chiswick Swimming Club (formed 1896)
They were closed by Hounslow Council in 1990 because of
the significant amount of money needed to bring the baths
up to safe and acceptable modern day standard. Their closure
was very unpopular with the local community and the Friends
of Brentford Baths was set up to try to find a way to acquire
the baths. Twelve years later and the Grade II listed building
is still derelict, although it now has a new owner and planning
permission has been granted for the basic structure to be
retained and converted into five houses and offices.
I hope you enjoy the rest
