BOOMTOWN BRENTFORD

More money is being poured into Brentford than probably
anywhere else in London. The large developments being
built at the time (2002) are Capital West, on the site
of the old gasworks, Ferry Quays, where the Thames
Soap works used to operate, Brentford Lock which covers
the site of a leather tannery, and the Island Development
on the land used by the British Waterways Depot for
transferring goods from river to canal or canal to road.
In the pipeline is the wholesale redevelopment of a
large tract of land south of the high street stretching
from St Lawrence' church to the Heidelberg factory, The
dreary 1950s shops and flats of County Parade are to go,
as are the abandoned warehouses on the river's edge. The
new development proposed by Brentford's Town Centre Ltd
is set to include a multiplex cinema, a large supermarket,
restaurants, bars, cafes as well as houses and live and
work units. New riverside walkways are planned and more
moorings for boats. Let us hope that all this will kick
start the town's economic revival and will not suffer the
same fate as other redevelopment schemes for Brentford.

I hope you enjoy the rest
