HISTORY OF THE
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
OF BRENTFORD

Roman Catholic Churches

A Roman Catholic church and school was founded in Brentford in 1856
for workers from Ireland who were laying Isambard kingdom Brunel's
Great Western Railway line. From 1857 Catholics used the premises
of a former Baptist chapel in Market Place. There was a Catholic school
in the Butts in 1869 and the church of St John the Evangelist in Boston
Park Road was opened in 1866 to seat 300. There was also a Roman Catholic
School at the junction of Cliften Road and Brook Road South, where our
friend Daniel O'Neil used to attend. St Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church
in Gunnersbury Ave opened in 1931 in a hall next to the new Gunnesbury
Grammar School.
