Mothering Sunday is one of our long established family
celebrations and Father’s Day has come to stay, too but
did you know that the last Saturday in September is
Grandparent’s Day?
Age Concern started it in 1990 because of the fear that
through social mobility, increase in divorce and the
tendency of young people to move away from home at
an earlier age, grandparents and their grandchildren
were in danger of losing that very special relationship
between the young and the old.
It is the special role of grandparents to be more indulgent
than a parent, to have time to listen, to baby-sit and to
share confidences; while nearly every grandparent I meet
claims that having grandchildren brings a new lease of life.
Grandparent’s Day is not without its commercial side, of
course, and shops are offering gifts, cards and flowers,
but if it results in families being brought closer together,
then I am in favour.
I am reminded of a story told by Dr William Barclay. A
grandfather and his small grandson were walking on the
beach when they met another elderly gentleman. He was
full of grumbles and to crown it all, he had a touch of
sunstroke. The little boy had been listening to the
conversation, but didn’t get it quite right. As they
parted he put his small hand into the larger one and
gave it a squeeze saying: “Grandpa, I hope you never
catch a sunset”
So, on this newest of family days, I raise my hat to
all grandparents and to the benefits it brings.

I hope you enjoy the rest
