"THE GAMES I USE TO PLAY"

As a child my playground was the road I lived in.
There was no traffic so every day after school
the roads would be filled with children playing
with brothers, sisters, neighbours and friends.
I used to play Hopscotch and chalk numbers on
the pavement outside my house. If it was the
skipping season I used to get round my sister
Joyce to hold the end of my skipping rope literally
to turn a skipping rope across the road while
as many girls as possible piled in to skip together.
I used to get the milk tops of the milk bottles
and put them on my top and see all the pretty
colours spinning around when I whipped the top.
When people walked by on the pavement they
had to be careful and dodge the whizzing toys
as they careered across the ground. If you were
daring you could try rigging up an impromptu
swing on a lamppost. All you needed was a length
of sash cord and a cushion pinched from the sofa.
You slung the cord over the lamppost and tied
the cushion to the end and there was your swing.
It was a race to get as many swings as possible
before a policeman caught you and ended the game.

I hope you enjoy the rest
