Although, in theory, gas irons were quicker and
more efficient than the old hotplate variety,
they did have some distinct drawbacks. Not least
was the speed at which you could move them. If
you hurried to get the dreaded ironing out of
the way and moved to fast, the flames would
spurt out of the sides of the iron and scorch
the clothes. Not to mention the risk of singed
eyebrows!
