My Memories of Harnage Road
I knew a few of the people who lived in Harnage Road, mainly
because I went to school with their children. My biggest memory
of Harnage Road was Jackie Chapman, he was born with his arms
behind his back. He naturally grew up with this handicap, adjusting
to life and becoming a very active person in Junior Football, he
started up a Football team named HARNAGE CELTIC and collected a
group of footballers. Sidney Townsend (brother of Len Townsend
who played for Brentford), Kenny Pilgrim, Bertie Green
Frankie Ovens (our goalkeeper, a good laugh), Sid Shephard (the
best left half I have ever played with) and others. Jack used to
send us letters, which he wrote with his feet, he was able to use
them as his hands. When we had our team meetings at the Pottery Arms,
Jack used to drink a pint glass of beer, using his mouth grip the
glass between his teeth and drink it within 30 seconds or so. If
anybody was about other than the lads, we used to hold the glass
for him, he could play darts by laying the darts on the floor and
with his bare left foot, he would pick up the dart between his toes
and dispatch it with great accuracy, he was hard to beat, Jack was
very determined in what ever he tried. I'll always will remember him.
