BRENTFORD LIBRARY
The American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated £5.400
for the construction of Brentford's public library one of
500 which he helped set up. His name appears above the entrance
to the building on the corner of Clifton Road and Boston Road,
together with the year of his donation, 1903. It opened to the
public in May 1904.
TRAM SERVICE
An electric tram service through Chiswick started in April 1901
initially as far as Kew Bridge then extended to Hounslow a few
months later The trams were replaced by electric trolleybuses
in the mid-1930s.
ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH
St George's Church in Brentford High Street was built in 1887 to
replace the original church, which dated from the 1760s. In 1913
a tower was added. The church was declared in 1959 and four years
ago the musical museum opened in the building
BRENTFORD'S TOWN NAME
Brentford's town name is derived from a ford crossing the river Brent.
The earliest reference to a bridge there was in 1224.
