m Brentford (Middlesex) - A town to remember - THE MACLEANS FACTORY

The MACLEAN FACTORY

The PYRENE FACTORY

The "MACLEAN FACTORY" was well known for its toothpaste,
situated on the Great West Road 1932

This factory was founded by Sir Alexander Maclean in 1919, in Paddington, to
manufacture pharmaceuticals and tioletries for retail chemists. By 1926 the
company was producing a toothpaste which was sold under the "MACLEANS"
name and had moved to a rented factory in Park Royal. During the late 1920's
an antacid powder for the relief of indegestion proved very successful and in
August 1932 the company opened its own, much larger, factory on the Great
West Road at the junction with Boston Manor Road.

Macleans became a public company in 1935 and added further brands to their
range by purchasing them from other pharmaceutical companies. "Mac" throat
lozenges, Fynnon's salts and Lucozade were taken over in this way. The company
also set up a tin plate works at Isleworth to provide tins for the packaging
and sale of its products.

Macleans was brought by the Beecham Group in 1938
