AS IT WAS
and
AS IT IS NOW

photograph of the North side of Market Place as it was
The north side of the Market Place,
photographed in 1911. The White Horse
was licensed by 1603. The house on the
extreme left was lived in by Joseph
Mallard Turner, the artist, at the end
of the eighteenth century. Aged 10 years
he was sent to live with his uncle,
William Marshall, a butcher in Brentford.
Turner attended a school at 125 High
Street. His uncles house was demolished early this century.

The inn has been renovated but still keeps
its old charm.
