BEATING THE BOUNDS
AS IT WAS
and
AS IT IS NOW
The ceremony of beating the bounds is very ancient,
surviving in Old Brentford into the 1920's. Each
year during the three days that preceded Ascention
Day the parish officials had to travel the perimeter
of the parish, checking that the boundary stones
were in their correct position. This photograph
records th 'beating of the bounds' in Old Brentford
c.1900 and was taken in Windmill Road at the junction
with Colonel's Drive which is now called 'The Ride'.

The ride entrance from the Windmill Road end
looks very insignificant. There used to be a
Children's Home in the Ride and I used to go
there and see some friends of mine, who were
at Ealing Road School.
