THE BRENTFORD MOMUMENT
AS IT WAS
and
AS IT IS NOW
The unveiling of the Brentford monument on 12th May
1909 by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland , seen
to the left of the monument. On the right, Mr.
Montagu Sharpe points to one of the four events
in Brentford's history recorded on the monument.
Some of the earlier historical occurences, such
as the crossing of the River Thames by Julius
Ceasar, have no documentary or archaelogical
evidence to substantiate their claim. The
monument was sited on the wharf at the bottom
of Ferry Lane. Over the years it became
submerged under coal unloaded at the wharf,
rediscovered in 1955, it was resited on the
west of Ferry Lane.

The Brentford Monument is now sited outside
the County Court on the west side of juntion
of Alexandra Road and the High Street. Whether
or not the details are correct, it makes good
reading, imaging Old Julius Ceasar strolling
up the High Street. They had some prehistorical
findings in Brentford Library on display at one
time.
