ST. LAWRENCE'S CEMETERY
AS IT WAS
and
AS IT IS NOW

photograph of St. Lawrence's Cemetery as it was
The south side of St' Lawrence's Church, seen from
the cemetery, early this century. A chapel occupied
this site in the twelfth century and was replaced
in the Middle Ages by the first St. Lawrence's
Church. The present tower dates from this building,
whilst the nave was rebuilt in 1764. In 1961 when
the parishes of St. Lawrence, St. George and St.
Paul were amalgamated, St. Lawrence's Church was
closed

As you can see in the photograph it was impossible
to see anything of the cemetery. When I was a choir
boy, I went into the cemetery and saw a grave that
had the skull and crossbones on it stating that the
person buried there was a pirate, I think the date
was about 1750.
