Brentford (Middlesex) - A town to remember - THE PYRENE FACTORY
The "PYRENE FACTORY" was well known for its fire extinguishers,
situated on the Great West Road 1930 - 1969
The British arm of the Pyrene Company of Delaware began manufacturing fire
Extinguishers in Stoke Newington in 1920. By the late 1920's they had expanded
into the production of a range of vehicle safety accessories such as: handheld
fire extinguishers, car bumpers (which were not generally fitted on most new
cars at that time) and snow chains. Pyrene also produced fire extinguishing
systems for ship's engine rooms, oil storage depots and refineries and airfield
crash tenders and held the British licence for three patent metal finishing
processes including Parkerizing.
Their new factory on the Great West Road replaced works in Stoke Newington
and East London which the company had outgrown. It offered excellent road
access for delivery and distribution and its site was large enough to provide
a demonstration and testing ground fir its fire extinguishers, behind the factory.
The building is noted for its facade, featuring a 110 foot high tower and decorated
with green and red faience tiles. Now known as Westlink House, it has been the
headquaters of Tarmac International Properties since 1980.
