HISTORY OF
THE ADULT SCHOOLS
OF BRENTFORD

In 1835 a Mechanics' Institute for Brentford and the
vicinity was' established for the diffusion of Useful
Knowledge by means of Lectures, Classes, Libraries of
Reference and Circulation Reading Rooms etc, etc'.
Mechanics Institutes were voluntary organisations set
up to provide education for manual workers. The
Brentford Institute had closed by 1890. By 1901-2 the
Middlesex County Council was running technical
education classes. In Brentford people could study
cookery at the Vestry hall carpentry and woodturning
in Boars Head Yard; shorthand, typewriting, bookkeeping
and dress making at the Town Hall. By 1903-4 Brentford
Polytechnic had its own building at Bramley House, no 2
the Butts. In 1914 classes were held on dress making,
nursing, French, Shorthand, book-keeping and type-writing
every evening, but by 1922 shorthand and book-keeping
appear to have been the only subjects on offer. By 1924
evening classes had transferred to the Rothschild School
in Brentford High Street and in 1930 to the newly opened
secondary school in Boston Manor Rd where they are still
held today.
