HISTORY OF
THE BOAT CHILDREN SCHOOLS
OF BRENTFORD

The problem of educating the peripatetic children who
lived on the canal boats was formidable. It was addressed
by the Grand Union Canal Company, which provided
the barge Elsdale, converted into a school room at
the Bulls Bridge Depot in Southall in the 1930s and
by the London City Mission In 1896 this evangelical
institution provided education from their premises
in Brentford End. In 1904 the mission built the
Boatman's Institute in the butts. Boat children were
now able to attend school at the institute while the
family barges were being loaded and unloaded. It was
irregularly attended by children of all ages. In 1932
the canal children were allocated two rooms in
Brentford Secondary Modern School and in 1950 they
moved into the former St Lawrence's school building
in the Ham. This closed in 1957.
