In 1839 a Catholic living in Brentford complained
that here where there are 12 of 14 Catholic families
falling into decay for the want of religious instruction
and no less than 34 children exposed to the erring
institutions of this corrupted town, for want of a
Catholic school House of our own. It seems that a
Catholic school had been set up by 1851. The school
attached to the Church of St John its first recorded
in 1864 and in 1865 it had 99 pupils (28 boys, 19 girls
and 52 infants) and was in the Butts. In1901 it moved
to Brooke Rd and in 1968, to Boston Park Rd. It was
relocated to a new site west of the church in 1972 and
in 1991-2 a new school building was erected and officially
opened by Cardinal Basil Hume in September 1992.
Gunnersbury Roman Catholic School opened 1919 as a
secondary school in St John's Church Hall. In 1926
when pupils numbered 65 it was transferred to a house
in Boston Park Rd. The new school buildings in
Gunnersbury Avenue were opened in January 1932.
It was a Roman Catholic Grammar School by 1944 but
became a Comprehensive School in 1971 the lower
school being in Gunnersbury Avenue and the upper in
new buildings in the Ride. More buildings were put
up in the Ride and the whole school was relocated
there in 1984. The Gunnersbury Avenue premises have
been used for the International School (an Arab/English
school) since 1988.
