The SPERRY GYROSCOPE WORKS

Before moving to the Great West Road, Sperry had its works
in Shepards Bush The company offices were in Victoria.

Sperry Gyroscope made gyroscopic compasses, gyrostabilizers,
searchlights and similar apparatus. It was known worldwide
for its ship's compasses which were fitted to all the great
ocean liners and were standard equipment throughout the Royal
Navy. The company manufactured aircraft instruments for both
military and civil use. The directional gyro and artificial
horizon were fitted in almost every plane flying.

The factory building was faced with brown brickwork dressed
with Portland stone and had some advanced features. The water
that circulated in its heating system was warmed in sumray
radiators mounted in the southern slopes of the factory roof
Compasses were tested on large swinging gantries and in rocking
jigs designed to simulate the motions of a ship at sea. The roof
of the factory incorporated a flat section which was used for
the testing of searchlights. It was situated on the south side
of the Great West road by the Grand Union Canal.
