Story from Janis
entitled
"St Valentines Day"

I have fondest memories of St Valentines day being a teenager of fourteen and in love,
it was such a joy to open my Valentine card's that arrived through my letter box on this
romantic day not knowing who they were from, it was a good guessing game. My mother
always said that the first man that you see in the morning when you,ve pulled your curtains
open was your Valentine and surprisingly it always turn out to be the postman or milkman
as they were always the first guy's to be out and about that time in the morning. I can
honestly say that I used to really look forward to Valentines Day. I used to go to the little
corner shop called Cox's at the top of Greet Rd where they had a good selection of Valentine
cards, some were displayed in boxes with bracelets attached to the front of the card's with
shiny stones made of paste they looked like real diamonds and hearts with flowers and lace
even earrings were attached to the colourful hearts, they looked so pretty but I wasn't one
of the lucky ones to receive a Valentine card in a box. Now that I am no longer a teenager
the cards have stopped and I still look out of my window on this day of romance to see what
good looking fellow is passing by.
People send gifts and cards to show loved ones they love them the story begins.
Valentine was a priest living in Rome under the reign of the Emperor Claudius who was finding
it more and more difficult to maintain the size of his armies. Many soldiers were no longer
willing to travel and fight as they were now married with families. When Claudius discover
this problem he consider it a threat to the safely of Rome and decreed that henceforth all
engagements and marriages were to be cancelled. The punishment for breaking the new law was
imprisonment, Valentine was approached by a young couple wishing to wed, he performed the
ceremony and soon the word spread that young lovers had a friend. He continued marrying couples
against the law of the Emperor and was eventually arrested. Despite the protestations of the
Roman Senate and the many friends of Valentine he remained in the dungeons until his death in
270 AD. Another story says that Valentine was sentenced to death and on his last day he thanked
his jailers daughter for her friendship signing his farewell note "From your Valentine".
If you chose roses for your loved one today, you are continuing a truly romantic tradition.
From the time of Solomon, a rose has been the flower must closely linked to love and friendship.
Go back centuries, however, and we find a tribute just as glowing "True fragrance," "Will
always cling to the hand that gives you roses," these words, come from an old Chinese proverb.
I found this interesting piece of paper displayed in a florist window the meaning of roses.
