From: Albert Russell Date: 28/01/07 02:59:19 To: peter@rutt.inuk.com Subject: Brentford and Branford, Ct. USA Peter, I live in Branford, Connecticut USA, 06405. I belong to the Branford Historical Society and the Connecticut Society Of Genealogists. I have enjoyed looking at some of your pictures of Brentford on the internet. Branford was founded in 1644 by some of the settlers who were from the Brentford area. When we celebrated our 350th anniversary in 1994 we had visitors from your town. We are considered to be sister cities. Many towns or cities throughout the world have designated sister cities. I would feel proud and honored if you could send some pictures or brochures of the old and new Brentford. This would allow me to show many of our school children in Branford and senior citizens where many of our settlers came from in England. My grandmother, who lived to the fine age of 99, would tell me stories of southern England and her days at Beachy Head when she was a young girl. Looking forward to hearing from you Albert Russell, 16 Woodvale Road, Branford, Connecticut. 06405 USA
South Dakota was established in 1905. It must be its centenary year so we send our congratulations
that established the town site. It was this railroad workers place of birth. His name has been lost. A little bit of fascinating - if useless - information: South Dakota covers 77,047 sq. miles, whilst our little Old England covers only 50,869......! I find it hard to comprehend such a vast area, and that's only half of the State North Dakota is another 70,665 sq. miles. Total: 147,712 - almost three times the size of England! Brentford never had more than 100 people. It now has about 40 people. If the founder were an old Brentonian, what a culture shock he must have experienced. Dakota Sioux Indians, Dodge City, the Black Hills! Wow! (To Be Continued as more info comes in) Brentford, South Dakota on 12th January 2006 Date: 10/25/06 19:14:25 To: Peter. W. Rutt Subject: Brentford SD Peter, I have heard from our friends in Brentford c/o Eva Oberle, and they are happy for us to use their 'History' as we wish. I sent a copy of Gillian Clegg's 'Brentford Past' to Eva with a request that she shows it to our 'ertswhile neighbours'. I am sad though that we still no nothing of our ancestor who named that South Dakota rail stop. Just imagine, he probably has descendants someplace in your locality even today. Was it Dan O'Neill who first of all launched this enquiry into Brentford, S.D.? Hope he logs on to your website someday soon to see the result of our endeavours. Ann 25.10.06 Date: 10/09/06 20:11:40 To: Peter. W. Rutt Subject: Brentford South Dakota Peter, Melissa of the Redfield Press gave me the name of local historians Frank and Eve Oberle of Mellette which is just down the road from Brentford, looks to be about 30 miles - and they have sent me a photocopy of the history of this little town in South Dakota, complete with rather indistinct photos included in the body of the text. Unfortunately tonight my scanner is playing up again and I am unable to scan and email this data to you. If it proves impossible, I will copy the file and mail it to you later in the week. I think it deserves being passed to the local Historical Society, if such still exists, Peter? The old photos of Brentford show it to be a real Western town, but sadly there is nothing to tell us who 'the railway employee' was who actually chose the name of Brentford. They know little of our town though, and only add a brief note about its history with a photo of what purports to be the 'Post Office at Brentford, England.' There is a British Railways insignia on the building but I don't recognise the place at all. This is all for now. I will endeavour to scan and send the file to you, but don't hold your breath! Best regards. Ann

Rutt Subject: Brentford, South Dakota Lewis, To set the stage: I now live in ireland but used to live in Brentford, Middlesex, England, and one of my contacts back home is Peter W. Rutt who runs an excellent website on our Brentford. Recently, we have been in touch with Melissa Kauth of the Redfield Press, who very kindly sent us three articles written about your Brentford. One of these was about a proposed school reunion, and this is where I found your email address. Peter and I are keen to find out what information is available on the founding of Brentford, South Dakota; there is surely a connection with Brentford, Middlesex? Do you have a photograph or two you could email us so that we can get an idea of how the town looks; we gather it is a very small place. In fact, anything at all would be appreciated. Melissa has promised to get in touch when she is next in the area, but your country is so vast she might not be in Brentford for years! Did the school reunion take place, and how many attended? We would love to know. I hope to hear from you sometime, and also hope you can understand our interest in Brentford, South Dakota. Regards. Ann S. Allridge, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland. But I do not live in Brentford, I live in Redfield about 45 miles away, but it is in my county, so I do cover it for my paper as we are a county paper. I am not originally from SD I am from a little town in Nebraska. I will try to travel to Brentford soon and get the pictures you are looking for. Just be patient with me please, as I go in all directions all the time. Sorry for the confusion. Melissa Date: 05 January 2006 17:19:13 To: Peter. W.
