Peter,
Another email.....
Glad I could be of service to you. I know
Brentford has a history book I just have been unable
to locate one as of yet. When I do I will copy it for
you and mail it to you.
If you are ever in America, let me know and I will
make sure you get to spend some time In Brentford, SD.
It is such a quaint little town and the small town
sticks together to make sure that it stays alive and well.

A nice offer...in all my life, I have only ever wanted to
visit (a) Venice and (b) the mid-western states of America........
Venice is on for this April (Deo volente), but the West
requires too many hours in a plane, which is not for me.
I shall wait for the advance in science when they can "
...beam me up, Scotty!"

Peter,
After quite a lot of jiggery-pokery, I managed to highlight and
email the three articles....please let me know (a) if they reach
you and (b) what you think of them. Initially, I tried emailing
but couldn't hold the highlighting, then I printed out the whole
bloomin' lot, and tried the email again and this time it worked!

Hello again Peter,
I have discovered another Brentford (of sorts) There is a very
famous reggae studio in Jamaica called 'Brentford Road Studio'
situated of course, in Brentford Road. Jamaica. No doubt another
denizen of Brentford had a hand in naming that one too!! I don't
know how long the road has been there but I will try to find out
from some of the Jamaican sites.
All the best,
Dan.

Hi Peter,
Thought I would drop in and give you some more useless information!!!
I have just discovered there is a town called Brentford in South Dakota
here in the US. Being in South Dakota puts it effectively in the middle
of nowhere!!! I am fascinated to know who named it and why! More news
as I have it. Are there any more Brentfords around the world? I'll bet
there is one in Australia and probably South Africa. Who Knows?!!!!
All the best,
Dan.

Peter,
Cheers to Daniel for finding out a bit more about Brentford in
South Dakota. I have tried several sites and could learn nothing
at all, except it was very obvious that it must be the lonesomest
place in America - only 70 people! Good lord.
I found it mentioned several times, but when I'd try to get data,
all that came up was 'Nothing recorded.'
It seems very likely that it was founded in 1906 by a homesick
Brentfordian, and, as you say, there may be relatives still in
TW8. We will keep looking!
All the best.

I have posted an enquiry on a Spink County website, so
hopefully we may learn something soon about this 'outpost'

Peter,
A little bit of fascinating - if useless - information:
South Dakota covers 77,047 sq. miles, whilst our little
Old England covers only 50,869......!
I find it hard to comprehend such a vast area and that's
only half of the State, North Dakota is another 70,665
sq. miles. Total: 147,712 - almost three times the size
of England!. I hope we can find out more about Brentford,
SD. If the founder were an old Brentfordian, what a culture
shock he must have experienced. Dakota Sioux Indians,
Dodge City, the Black Hills! Wow!
Regards.

Ken,
Thanks for email, I am absolutely delighted with your reply.
Although I live in Ireland, I keep in touch with Brentford
in the UK through family and through a Brentford website run
by Peter Rutt; it is on this website we have been discussing
your little town of Brentford, S.D.
Do I owe you $10.60, or would that have been the charge for
the printed history of Brentford? Please advise.
My thanks again.

Dear Ms. Allridge:
Brentford South Dakota was established in 1905. It was indeed
names for your town of Brentford, Middlesex, England. It was
so-named by an employee of the Soo Line Railroad, the company
that established the town site. It was this railroad workers
place of birth. His name has been lost.
Brentford never had more than 100 people. It now has about
40 people. The town records are probably in the home of the
town clerk. No e-mail address or anything like that.
Suggest you write to the Postmaster.c/o Brentford SD 57429.
Also write to Melissa Kauth, c/o Redfield Press, PO Box 440,
Redfield SD 574690440. Email address is:-
redpress@midconetwork.com
This is the county seat newspaper. She might be able to direct
your inquiry to someone in Brentford. There was a town history
written. However, we are a fee-based research institution and
charge research fees of a minimum of $10.60(US) for any research.

My folks originated in Brentford, Middlesex, England.
I recently saw mention of Brentford, South Dakota,
and wondered how it was so named. Do any records
exist concerning the founding fathers of Brentford,
S.D.? I understand it is a very small community
nowadays, but wonder about its history. Does anyone
know anything?. Can you please direct me to a contact?
Thanks in the hopes I will hear from your office.

Peter,
Yet another reply! These South Dakota folk are great to
acknowledge emails, which is a pleasant surprise. I have
'forwarded' to you as well as sending you copies of my replies.
I doubt if you will bother copying all this bumpf into your
website (now that's a suprise), but it is nice to be making
some progress on our search.
I will let you know if I hear from 'Melissa'.

I have been unable to locate any information on Brentford,
SD, but you might try the attached link to the South Dakota
State Historical Society and State Archives. Perhaps they
can provide some assistance. There is a library in Redfield,
South Dakota that might be able to help, but they are not
online as far as I know. I do not live in South Dakota so
that is about as much as I can suggest at this time. Another
possibility might be the South Dakota State University
library's reference desk. I would imagine that they have
online access, but it might be restricted to enroled students.

Peter,
I must be 'flooding' you with all these emails and
copies, but I'd like to keep you informed. It's great
fun, when the other side are so co-operative...so often
one can email a query and it is left out there in
cyberspace, unanswered/ignored. These folk in South
Dakota are something else!

Dear Ms. Allridge:
You owe us nothing! Our fee would have been charged had
we searched through the Brentford town history book on
your behalf. Turns out w don't even have a copy. though
the adjacent State Library next door does. We will have
someone take a peek in the next few days or so. No charge!
The Brentford Town History or Centenntial is long out of print.
Sincerely
Ken
