Looking after my eleven month old grandson Joseph
makes it very difficult to be able to do a lot of
things around the house now that he goes exploring
into any thing that he can get his little hands on.
I have got such a lot of Christmas cards to send to
my friends so now that he is having his afternoon
nap I will start the task of writing these cards.
Strange enough I happen to see in a book of Christmas
that I got out from the library, which mention the
lovely custom sending Christmas cards to one another.
Yet it all seems to have started by accident. In December
1843 a man called Henry Cole found he was late in writing
the letters of Christmas greeting which he always sent
to his friends. Since he did not have time to catch up
with his Yuletide correspondence he asked an artist,
Callcot Horsley, to design a card to send instead.
Other people saw the cards and, the following year,
they wanted some too. The custom spread quickly and
in 1880 the Postmaster General had, for the first
time, to make that familiar plea, "Post early for
Christmas!" Have you sent your Christmas cards yet?
I hope you enjoy the rest
